  • Scissors
  • Heavy cardboard
  • Masking tape or poster putty (optional)
  • Large sheet of paper
  • Several crayons, papers removed

  • Cut geometric shapes, letters, and numbers from heavy cardboard (or buy them pre-cut from an educational supply store).
  • Arrange the cut-outs randomly on a table, using some rolled-up masking tape or poster putty to hold them in place, if you like.
  • Cover the table with the paper.
  • Give your child several crayons.
  • Show her how to rub the crayons sideways over the paper and see the shapes appear.
  • If you like, move the paper and rub again.
  • Have fun identifying the shapes, letters, and numbers.
  • Display the paper or use it as gift-wrap.

Adult participation needed for use of scissors.
