  • Large beet
  • Saucepan
  • 1 quart water
  • Sieve
  • Bowl
  • 4 tablespoons salt
  • White cotton socks or other cotton items
  • 1/2 large red cabbage (optional)


  • Have your child wash the beet, then place it in the saucepan with the water.
  • Bring the water to a boil and simmer for about 30 minutes.
  • Pour the beet water through a sieve and into a bowl.
  • Stir the salt into the beet water.
  • Pour the beet water back into the saucepan.
  • Place the socks in the beet water and simmer for about 20 minutes.
  • Remove the saucepan from the heat and allow the socks to cool.
  • Rinse the socks in cold water and hang them to dry.
  • Wash the socks before wearing them.
  • If you like, use half of a large red cabbage instead of the beet.
